Your Guide to NFL Betting in Pennsylvania

Whoever decided that baseball was America’s pastime obviously has never bet on an NFL game.

The National Football League is by far the most bet-on sport in the United States. In 2021 its wagers made up half of the country’s sports betting total.

Due to its rise in popularity since its legalization in 2019, some Pennsylvania residents may be a little intimidated to join in on the fun. If that sounds like you, then look no further. This article will walk Pennsylvaniaders on the how-to’s of NFL sports betting according to the state’s most popular Sportsbooks.

Where can residents place a bet?

Sports bettors can place wagers in person at the many Pennsylvania land-based casinos or bet from their phones or computers!

Getting Started

When it comes to online sportsbooks, Pennsylvania has a great selection, with their top sites being: Caesars Sportsbook, BetRivers, Golden Nugget, DraftKings, FanDuel, and Barstool Sports. (The links above will take you to welcome offers for some of the sportsbooks mentioned)

To start sports betting online, users must create an account. This account will usually ask for the following information: name, date of birth, email address, cell phone number, last four digits of your Social Security number, account username, and password.

Once an account is created, players can deposit money into their accounts easily through online transfers. Once complete, they can head over to the live betting lines on the site and fill out a betting slip, verify the betting slip and payout information and then place their wager!

Navigating Betting Lines

Betting lines can be confusing for newcomers. On your sportsbook site of choice, you will select the league you wish to bet on (in this case NFL), and the odds for the upcoming games will appear. You will scroll through the list until you find the game you want to wager on, and you will find the odds listed. You also can filter between which odds you want to view (moneyline, spread, or totals).

When looking at game odds, it is important to note that the “favorite” team (the team with better odds of winning) will be accompanied by a – sign, and the “underdog” team (the team with worse odds of winning), will be accompanied by a + sign. This + or -, along with a number, is what is listed for bets on most sportsbooks.

NFL Betting Explained

The three most common ways to bet on the NFL are betting on the Moneyline, Point Spread, and Totals

Moneyline betting is when you bet on who will win the game. This is by far the most simple way to bet, so this could be a good option for beginners. If you decide to bet on the team with higher odds, there is less risk but a lower payout, whereas if you bet on the team with lower odds, there is a higher risk but a larger payout. Bets are usually on a $100 scale.

Point Spread betting is based on how many points a team must win by. Whichever team covers the listed spread of points (the favorite team must win by x amount of points or the underdog must not lose by more than x amount of points), indicates the winning wager.

Totals betting is when you wager on the combined total of points during a game. You can bet that the total points scored during a game will be under or over the listed total.

Additionally, you can also bet on things like specific players’ performance or certain events happening in certain quarters, these bets are called Props bets.

Multiple bets can be combined to form a Parlay bet, you can bet on year-long odds with Future bets, and you can even participate in Live bets on games that have already started!

Pennsylvania sports bettors have an abundance of user-friendly options to choose from when wagering on their favorite teams this NFL season!
