The three online poker rooms in Pennsylvania are all offering a tournament series in September. PokerStars MICOOP and WSOP MI both launched their tournaments within days of each other. The MICOOP or Pennsylvania Championship of online poker began last Friday, September 9th, while the WSOP MI series launched yesterday, September 11th, in Pennsylvania. BetMGM is now hosting its own online state championship poker series beginning this Thursday, September 15th.
BetMGM Poker made company history earlier this year by hosting its first tournament at the Aria Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. The event brought in over 340 players and had a guaranteed prize pool of $1 million, with winner Joey Weissman taking home over $224,000 in prize money. The poker brand is now using the momentum from that event to create an online poker series, the BetMGM Poker State Championships.
BetMGM’s Director of Poker, Luke Staudenmaier released in a statement, “This has been a transformational year for BetMGM Poker. Following a groundbreaking live event at ARIA in June, the State Championships is the largest online series in BetMGM Poker history. The momentum we’ve experienced in the past three months has inspired us to push for new heights.”
The online tournament starting this week is open to players in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Pennsylvania, where BetMGM is currently operating. Unfortunately, since interstate poker isn’t quite in full swing yet, players will only be competing against those within the same state. However, players do not need to be residents in the states they’re participating in, they only need to be within those state lines when competing. The schedules of the three states are identical, however, with players in each state competing during the same time.

The tournament will be the first state championship event held by BetMGM. The series will run across 26 events from September 15th – 25th, 2022. BetMGM is promising a total guarantee of at least $2 million, the largest online series by the brand. BetMGM New Jersey has the highest guaranteed prize pool of $795,000, with Pennsylvania close behind at $680,000. Pennsylvania players are competing for their slice of $540,000 in guarantees. Tournament buy-ins range from $100 to $2,500. The main event features a $1,000 buy-in and will take place over two days between September 25th and 26th.
This will be BetMGM’s second summer series despite the tournament being the brand’s first state championship event. BetMGM hosted its first-ever Summer PKO Fest in Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey back in August. PKO stands for progressive knockout, a newer format in the online poker world. The series featured a buy-in range from $20 to $215 per event.
